GORDON WINS AT PHOENIX
With his first career NEXTEL Cup Series win at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday night, Jeff Gordon tied the late Dale Earnhardt for 6th on the All-Time Win List. Gordon, who started from the pole, took the lead when the caution came out with 29 laps to go. He was on pit road as the yellow waved, but was able to stay on the lead lap and move to the point when the other leaders came in to pit. Gordon battled Tony Stewart in the final laps before taking the checkered flag and becoming the first driver to win at Phoenix from the pole. Stewart finished in second, with Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth rounding out the top-five, respectively. Gordon continues to lead the season ending point standings.
