How to Clean & Season A Cast Iron Skillet


January is all about getting a fresh start for the new year ahead. Along with all of your other resolutions, consider including this simple DIY guide for cleaning and seasoning your cast iron skillet with Sparkle® paper towels. We’ll show you how to do it with step-by-step instructions that’ll have your trusty skillet ready for all the dishes to come in the year ahead—homemade cornbread anyone? Yes, please! Bonus: When you’re done, simply toss your Sparkle® paper towels in the trash to keep things clean and tidy in your kitchen.
 

You will need:
  • A roll of Sparkle® paper towels
  • A bottle of canola oil
  • Your mama’s cast iron skillet
  • A little elbow grease!

Step 01
Start by cleaning out your cast iron skillet with mild soap and water. Then, use a few Sparkle® paper towels to get it completely dry.

Step 02
Next, using a few more fresh and clean Sparkle® paper towels, cover your skillet with a generous amount of canola oil.

Step 03
Make sure to get good coverage all over your cast iron skillet, from top to bottom.

While continuing to work in the oil, be sure to coat everything from the center and walls to the handle itself.

Step 05
Now, wipe off all of the excess oil with a few more clean Sparkle® paper towels. Don’t worry, there’s still a thin coating on there, we promise!

Step 06
Finally, place your skillet in the oven and set it to 500°F for 1 hour. Don’t forget to put a sheet of foil or a baking pan on the rack below to keep things clean. After the hour is up, let the skillet cool completely. TIP: Repeat these same steps 2-3 more times for an impeccable coating!
